Chapter 19

“I love you,” Mira said to her reflection in the bathroom mirror. “You’re the most amazing thing to ever happen to me. Do you know that?”

She tilted her head. How had that sounded?

Her reflection kept its own secrets. Especially when she was dressed as Mistress Misty, a woman who spent most of her weekend nights entertaining clients for enough money to get by and save for the future. These days, she approached her work as the intense practice required for getting ahead in the game. It didn’t matter who her partner was that hour. Her brain split in two, and her soul was on fire.

Of course, she thought about Blair the most. The woman helping make Mira’s dreams come true.

“I can’t imagine my life without you.” Mira placed her hands on either side of the dungeon’s bathroom mirror. Her eyelashes batted through the Venetian mask she wore for work that night. Was she convincing? Did she convey the kind of passion, the adoration required to win the votes of those judging her every move at the Summit?

When Blair knocked on the dungeon door, Mira slowly moved away from the mirror. Play it cool. No, she wasn’t planning on dropping L words that night, but she needed practice in more than her actions.

Her words were always up for inspection, too.

“Good,” Mira said when she opened the door wider for Blair to come in. “You wore the outfit.”

Blair scoffed. “How can you tell?” Her baggy sweater and gym shorts covered up the black and pink lingerie beneath, but Mira knew. It was in the way her partner walked into the room and how she carried her chest. Not my first time interacting with her while she wears those pretty undies. The last time was what led Mira to buy Blair a portable AC. She sweated through her underwear so thoroughly that I had to send them through the wash twice. After that, she told Blair to only wear fancy underwear when asked – no matter how nice it was to sneak into her apartment and find her in nothing but the department store bra. Takes some of the fun out of it. Mira liked the thrill, too. Nothing said hot night like coming across her girlfriend in a pair of regular cotton undies and an old nightgown set that suggested she planned on being alone that night.

This all came back to what Mira wanted to talk about that night.

“Have a seat at the table. Do you need anything to drink? Water? Tea?” Mira looked over her shoulder as she approached the small kitchen in the corner of the dungeon. “Maybe a glass of wine?”

“Honestly? Sounds good.” Blair pulled off her gym shorts but left the sweater on. As she sat at the table, the pink lace of her underwear poked out from beneath her thin and gray sweater. Mira grabbed the bottle of mid-range wine she kept locked in a cupboard. One of the glasses was behind the bottle, but the other was left out to dry on the tiny bit of counter space allowed for her tea mugs and sex toys.
